Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is a field for data lovers. Industries are hungry for folks with solid data science skills and a knack for turning two-dimensional findings into three-dimensional insights.
- You can try earning GIS experience on the job.
- You can sign up for free courses in Python and ArcGIS.
- And/or you can put a regionally accredited GIS degree or certificate on your résumé.

Meet Our Team of GIS Experts
There’s nothing worse than amateur career advice. When we were developing this site, we were determined to give you real-world insights. So we enlisted the help of dedicated data researchers and qualified GIS writers, including:
- A current GIS Technician with a BA in Geography who has also worked as a GIS Analyst and GIS Data Specialist.
- A current Geospatial Analyst/Data Scientist with a BA in Geography and an MS in Geospatial Information Science.
Better yet, their counsel is based on years of GIS experience in many different workplace scenarios, including the National Guard and the South Carolina Department of Transportation.
GISDegree.org is an independent resource, so our team has no skin in the academic game. After browsing through our degree guides and reading up on GIS Career Resources, you may determine that the best scenario for you at this moment is GISP certification. Or a low-cost BS with a GIS concentration at your local public university. Or an online MS in GIS from a prestigious private school. Whatever you decide, we’ll back you to the hilt.
